What You Should know before you buy a fire alarm system:
  • Always buy a commonly sold system that has more than 1 local vendor. If you do not you may end up paying inflated maintenance cost during the systems life.
  • Make sure the installers carry an electrical license for Nebraska.
  • Make sure every system inspector shows you their Inspectors License.
  • Always demand a detailed contract so you know what you are suppose to get.
  • Always insist on as-built drawings when your installation is finished. These drawings are required by code and the state fire marshal.
  • Always make sure a permit has been taken out on your system before work starts. This could save you expensive changes. Ask to see the approval paperwork.
  • Make sure the central station that may monitor your alarm is UL Listed or FM listed. This insures that proper monitoring equipment and personnel are being used. There are too many fly by night central stations.
  • Never let an apprentice work by themselves on your project. A licensed person must provide direct oversight  at all times. There is a reason they are just an apprentice.
